Lawlessness

There is a force at work in our society. One does not have to look far to see its influence: the so-called "autonomous zones" in the Pacific Northwest, the looting, burning and pillaging of our major cities, the rise of violent crime around our nation. This force was at work from the beginning of creation. It was evident in Jesus’ day, and its rise to prominence in the days to come has been prophesied in the apocalyptic texts of the Bible. Its name is lawlessness, and its author is none other than the rebel of old, Satan himself.
Let’s start with a biblical definition:
Lawlessness - To be lawless is to be contrary to the law or to act without regard to the law. Laws are necessary in a sinful world (1 Timothy 1:9), and those who choose to act lawlessly further sin in the world. The word for “lawlessness” in the Bible is often translated “iniquity.” According to the Bible, the root of all lawlessness is rebellion. [emphasis added] https://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-lawlessness.html
Rebellion was Satan’s great sin. He staged a rebellion in heaven, wanting to ascend to the place of God. When he was unsuccessful in his coup attempt, he and his co-conspirators were cast down to earth, and they have been trying to engender lawlessness and rebellion in the hearts of men ever since. If he can’t take out God Himself, Satan takes great delight in sparking rebellion in the hearts of His prize creation. From Genesis 3 onward, we find the story of man’s tragic rebellion against the God who loves him.
In our world, the spirit of lawlessness wears many faces.
In our world, the spirit of lawlessness wears many faces. We can see it at work where anarchy rules, in countries where roving bands of rebels or despotic rulers carry the day. But lawlessness is never absent where mankind is concerned (not in this lifetime), and this same spirit of lawlessness can be seen at work in our own country. As Christ honoring conservatives, it is easy to see the spirit of lawlessness at work in the party of open borders, forced medical treatment, uncontrolled rioting/murder and legalized drugs, infanticide and “euthanasia”; but can we recognize the face of lawlessness in our own party?
We see this same independent, rebel spirit at work in those who ascribe to Libertarianism. The preamble from their own party platform sheds light on their mindset:
“As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty: a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and are not forced to sacrifice their values for the benefit of others…
Consequently, we defend each person’s right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and welcome the diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from government or any authoritarian power.” [emphasis added] Libertarian Party Platform (See our post on Comparative Party Platforms, as well as the Links page for more on Libertarian political views)
You might be surprised to know that, like Democrats, Libertarians are often pro-abortion, pro-legalized marijuana, pro-prostitution and open to any and all expressions of sexuality and identity. Though they are with us in our pursuit of limited government, low taxation, free speech and gun rights, they actually go much further to reject the rule of law or any moral code almost entirely.
Of course, this is the Libertarian Party’s position; for any individual candidate who is libertarian leaning it is of vital importance to review their voting record (for incumbents) and to try to get under the rhetoric to see just how committed a liberty-leaning challenger is to this “anything goes” agenda. We have provided some resources to that end. See our post, Voter Guides and the Links page, but also please attend candidate forums, follow them on social media and speak to people who know these candidates personally in order to try to ascertain exactly where they stand. In a traditionally God-fearing community such as ours, most will not come right out and tell you that they want to undermine the rule of God’s moral law. It would be tragic to learn this only after they have achieved elected office.
Further comments in the GotQuestions.org entry on lawlessness (referenced above) read almost like a prophecy over our nation if we do not eradicate the influence of lawlessness in our midst:
“When a society ignores the law, lawlessness is the result, and chaos ensues. The time of the judges after Joshua’s death was marked by upheaval, oppression, and general disorder. The biblical historian puts his finger on the reason for the tumult: “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit” (Judges 21:25)… God has a purpose for establishing human government: “to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right” (1 Peter 2:14). Rulers are God’s appointees to maintain order and promote righteousness in a civil society. “Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves” (Romans 13:2). In other words, lawlessness is condemned in Scripture.” https://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-lawlessness.html
Analyzing the Libertarian preamble above from a biblical viewpoint, we as Christians have accepted the fact that it is God Himself who is sovereign over the affairs of men, that there are certain activities which God has deemed unprofitable, even destructive and worthy of judgment; and though He has granted us free will and is by no means authoritarian, He is indeed the ultimate authority. It is our delight as His children to bow to His benevolent rule. Furthermore, God has appointed governments to rule over us, and it is our responsibility to be subject to those governing authorities, so long as their requirements are not contrary to God’s own.
If we, the redeemed, partner with this spirit of lawlessness which is at work in both the left and the far right, we are partnering with the sons of disobedience and the enemy himself.
There is a saying coined by a man named Aleister Crowley that sounds uncannily like a credo the Libertarian party might espouse. That statement is, simply, “Do what thou wilt” – ie… do whatever you want. If you are unfamiliar with who Aleister Crowley was, he was the founder of a religion called Thelema, which was, in turn, the foundation for wicca, modern paganism, chaos magic and satanism. He called himself, “the Beast” and was labeled by the press of his day as “the wickedest man in the world", and the root of the religion he founded and all its offshoots is lawlessness. If we ignore the root of lawlessness at this time and remain ignorant of its operations in our midst, we may one day wake up to find our beautiful state overtaken by an agenda that rejects God, rejects His divine order in creation and society, and rejects any sort of moral code of behavior. We have the opportunity to champion godly order in these elections before us. Let’s not miss that opportunity, but rather do our research and vote according to righteousness and reverence.
